Summer Sizzles with Plenty of Events for Downtown Residents

If you missed a busy June and July calendar of events, don't fret, because the Downtown Residents Council has more planned for the coming months.

Of course, our regular monthly meeting will be on Tuesday, August 9th. Monthly meetings start at 6PM and are usually finished within an hour. In addition to regular business, such as committee reports and a presentation from the Cincinnati Police Department, voter registration information will be made available and announcements are welcome. If you haven't attended a meeting in a while, please join us in Room 3A on the third floor of the Public Library. We will also be sharing more news on events, opportunities and benefits of living in our neighborhood.

Be one of the first to see the newly expanded Hamburger Mary's on Wednesday evening, August 24th. The DRC is hosting a special social event at this neighborhood eatery starting at 6PM. The DRC will also make a special presentation to the Children's Department of the Cincinnati Public Library to support their youth arts program.

Speaking of the library, the DRC has made quite an impact through our support of our downtown branch. Over the past two summers, over 1000 children have participated in the Summer Arts Program of the Cincinnati Public Library. And, this summer, many downtown residents volunteered for programs such as "Scritch, Scratch" scratchboard art, "Window Fireworks" painting, "Sculpture Collaboration" creations, and "Pop-Up and Move" card making, to name a few. One little girl attending one of the Wednesday evening programs said with great enthusiasm, "Oh, I just love coming to the library Wednesdays - it's just so much fun!" Many of these wonderful creations can be seen within the windows of the Children's Department of the Public Library. Go see for yourself!

As a part of our on-going mission of keeping our residents informed, the DRC co-sponsored a "Candidates Mixer" forum at McFadden's Restaurant on July 13th. Nearly every candidate for mayor or city council was in attendance. This was a true mixer where attendees met the candidates on a personal level through informal conversations. We were able to cut through the sound bites and learn a bit about what is really going on inside the hearts and minds of our potential city leaders.

The Downtown Residents Council is also pleased to announce that Bandana Walking Maps of Downtown Cincinnati are now available! Pedestrian walking maps printed on colorful bandanas are available now at Metronation (9th and Elm, 564-0095) and will also be available at DRC member meetings and socials. The 21x21 bandanas highlight downtown Cincinnati attractions and are available for $10 each. They come in 11 different colors. Bandana walking maps are a fundraising project of the DRC and proceeds will be used to sustain this project and for other projects that enhance downtown living.

As a voice for our downtown residents, and all those who visit our city, the leadership and members of the DRC have set a clear set of goals for our organization. These goals include: working with the city on community safety issues, continuing to volunteer our time for cleaner streets and parks, promoting more social interaction between residents, increasing our membership, continued enthusiasm for the local arts community and visionary organizations, and steadfastly supporting our own neighborhood businesses.

The DRC was established in 1985 as a resource for residents of the Central Business District to exchange experiences and express concerns. Our members come from all walks of life, sharing a love for living in downtown Cincinnati and a common interest in improving the overall quality of life within our city. As individuals and as a group, the DRC has a vision of a vibrant, 24-hour city, with all its necessary amenities. All who are interested in the success of Downtown Cincinnati are welcome. DRC membership dues are just $15 for individuals or $20 per household, and $50 for businesses.
